In the Soviet Union of the 1950s,Spartacus was considered to be, in the words of Karl Marx, ‘a true representative of the ancient proletariat.’ It was therefore only logical for him to become the principal character in a ballet composed by the Georgian-Russian composer Aram Khachaturian.
