Description

Valentines (2015) for High Voice & Piano is a collection of love songs penned in collaboration with writer Lillian Li. While the three pieces here prescribe to conventions of the western art song, their musical personalities owe more to the traditions of the American musical, the Great American Songbook, and most especially to the cabaret genre. As such, the text and music are woven together to create colorful, evocative, highly theatric showpieces for both soprano and pianist. It is my hope that these three songs serve as a foundation for an ever-expanding set of love songs, providing an opportunity to explore through music and poetry the limitless aspects of love and its myriad forms of expression: unrequited love, puppy love, old love, a parent’s love of a child, etc.
