Quartet for Tubas

QUARTET FOR TUBAS was written during the winter of 1969 for the specific purpose of entering it in the International Tuba Ensemble Composition Contest sponsored by the University of Miami School of Music and the Tuba Society of Miami, Constance Weldon, sponsor. After the final judging in September of 1969 the somposition was awarded first prize.The piece uses the tuba quartet as a serious medium and explores the full range of instruments. A “no holds barred’ approach was used in the writing, and the musical devices which might traditionally be considered idiomatic for the instrument of ensemble were avoided.
